The audit: what you actually have
We combine link data from Ahrefs, Semrush, and Google Search Console, because no single tool sees everything, then deduplicate to referring domains and sort every one into four buckets: good links worth building more of, harmless neutral links, risky links worth watching, and genuinely toxic links tied to a real pattern. Most links land in the first two buckets and need nothing done. The panic-disavow instinct usually does more harm than the links themselves, which we explain in auditing and cleaning up a messy backlink profile.
| Bucket | What it looks like | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Good | Relevant, real traffic, editorial | Build more like it |
| Neutral | Low quality, harmless, no pattern | Ignore; Google discounts these |
| Risky | Paid-link footprints or spam networks | Investigate, disavow only if severe |
| Toxic | A deliberate scheme or a manual action | Disavow at domain level |
The gap analysis: where your competitors are winning
We take your search competitors, the sites outranking you for your target keywords, not just your business rivals, and find the domains linking to at least two of them but not to you. Those overlapping, relevant sites are your highest-probability targets, because they already link within your category. Then we filter hard for real organic traffic and topical fit and attach a tactic to each survivor. The step-by-step is in our gap analysis walkthrough.
What the deliverable includes
- A full referring-domain inventory sorted into good, neutral, risky, and toxic
- A conservative disavow recommendation, only where genuinely warranted
- An anchor text distribution review flagging any over-optimized pages
- A prioritized target list from the competitor gap, each with a suggested tactic
- A short plan mapping which pages should receive authority first, and why
Anchor text and risk, checked page by page
Sitewide anchor numbers hide problems, so we check your priority commercial pages individually. A page whose inbound links are mostly exact-match to your target keyword is a risk no sitewide average will reveal. Where we find over-optimization, the fix is building better links to rebalance, not chasing removals, following our anchor text framework.
Who should start here
- Companies inheriting a profile from a previous agency they do not trust
- Teams unsure whether their links are helping, neutral, or a liability
- Anyone about to invest in link building who wants a target list first
- Sites whose rankings stalled and who need to know if links are the cause
When you may not need a full audit
- Brand-new domains with almost no existing links to review
- Teams that ran a thorough audit within the last few months
What you do with it
The audit is designed to be actionable on its own, whether or not you continue with us. Most clients use it as the blueprint for the campaign that follows: it tells us which pages to strengthen, which publications to pursue, and which risks to keep an eye on. It is also the first thing we run when engaged as a B2B link building agency. Often the message is reassuring. A profile is usually messier than it is dangerous, and the real work is building forward, not cleaning up.
